
Making Your PET Blowing Machine Work with Just About Any IR Lamp
If you’ve ever dealt with PET blowing, you know the headache. If the heat isn’t perfectly even, your preforms either thin out or just pop. It’s frustrating. That’s why we built our IR lamps to be “drop-in” replacements. We’re talking about over 95% of the machines out there. It doesn’t really matter who built your machine; our lamps should just fit. The secret is in the basics. Compatibility mostly comes down to two things: the physical size and the electrical load. Most blow molders use a few standard lengths and specific voltage-to-wattage ratios to keep the heat steady. We stick to those common footprints. If you’re running a high-speed line, you’ll want the high-wattage tubes because they heat up fast. Just a heads-up: double-check that your power supply can handle that peak load. You don’t want to be the person tripping breakers on a Monday morning. What’s actually inside the glass? We use heavy-wall quartz. Why? Because cheap glass bows when it gets screaming hot, and that ruins everything. Inside, we use a halogen cycle. This stops tungsten from gunking up the glass and making it cloudy. It keeps the light clear and the heat strong for a lot longer. As for the plugs, we use R7s or SK15 connectors. They’re the industry standard for a reason—they just work. You can wire them up quickly without having to hunt for some weird custom adapter. A few things to watch out for on the floor. These lamps put out shortwave radiation, which is great because it punches through PET plastic quickly. But that intensity is a double-edged sword. If your reflectors are slightly off, that heat can bounce the wrong way and melt your wiring. It happens. Do yourself a favor: check your reflector angles when you install the lamps. If the heat isn’t hitting the preform dead-on, you’re wasting power and killing the ends of your lamps. And since we know waiting weeks for an OEM part is a nightmare, we keep these in stock.
