Getting Your Rubber Cure Right: It’s All About the Lamps
If you want great rubber without blowing through your power budget, it all comes down to where you put your IR lamps. We’ve all seen it—the nightmare of scorched surfaces and raw, under-cured centers. It’s frustrating. The secret to fixing that is simply getting the overlap and the distance between the lamps and the material exactly right.

I always go with shortwave IR lamps. Why? Because they actually get deep into the rubber. Medium or longwave options just don’t have that same punch. When you’re picking your gear, keep an eye on the voltage-to-wattage ratio. That’s what controls your heat density. If you use higher voltage tubes, you can go longer without the ends of the lamp getting cold. But be careful. If you cram too many watts into a tiny space, you’ll fry your filaments. It’s a balancing act. You have to time the wattage with your conveyor speed so the core hits the right temperature without burning the skin.
The Hardware Side of Things
We use high-purity quartz for these lamps. It has to be, otherwise, the thermal shock would just crack the glass. And please, don’t skimp on the connectors. We stick to R7s or SK15s because they actually stay put. A loose connection is a recipe for disaster—you’ll get arcing, and before you know it, your sockets are melted. Sometimes, you might need a coating on the glass to protect it from rubber splatter or to tweak the wavelength. Just keep in mind that coatings usually drop your total heat output a bit. It’s a trade-off, and it really depends on the specific rubber compound you’re working with.
Planning Your Layout
Here is a pro tip: stop lining your lamps up in a straight row. It creates these annoying “cold spots” between the tubes. Instead, try staggering them. It keeps the heat flow constant across the whole piece of material. Also, make sure your cooling fans can actually handle the heat building up around the reflectors. If the housing gets too hot, your lamps lose efficiency and they’ll burn out way faster. When you get the spacing right, you can actually turn down the wattage and still get the same cure rate. It’s a win-win.
